04 Feb From Ghana to London The Journey of Akra
Akra began with a simple but powerful belief — that the extraordinary handmade craftsmanship found across Ghana deserved a wider, global audience. What started as a personal discovery grew into a purpose-led business built on creativity, community, and cultural pride.
Founder Eva Obeng first recognised the opportunity while spending time in Ghana and seeing first-hand the quality and originality of locally made products. From beautifully crafted home items to distinctive accessories and natural products, the level of skill and artistry stood out. At the same time, many talented makers faced limited access to larger markets and fair commercial opportunities. Eva saw a way to connect these artisans with customers who would truly value their work.
Akra was created to build that bridge.
A Business with Purpose
From the beginning, Akra was never just about selling products — it was about creating impact. The goal was to support artisan communities, encourage creative talent, and bring authentic handmade goods to customers looking for something meaningful and different.
By working directly with makers and small producers, Akra helps ensure that craftsmanship is respected and rewarded. Each product carries not only visual beauty but also cultural story and human effort.
As a social enterprise, Akra is committed to giving back — returning value to the communities behind the products and supporting sustainable livelihoods through trade and visibility.
Starting Online — Growing Through Community
Akra first launched online, introducing handmade Ghanaian products to UK customers through ecommerce. Early customers responded strongly to the authenticity and uniqueness of the collections. Many were drawn not only to the products themselves but also to the story behind them.
As demand grew, customers wanted to see and experience the products in person. This led to Akra establishing a presence at Enfield Market, where face-to-face connection, customer feedback, and community support helped the brand grow further.
Markets provided more than sales — they created conversations, relationships, and trust.
Expanding the Product Range
Over time, the Akra range has expanded beyond home and fashion accessories to include natural products — most notably pure organic shea butter sourced from Ghana and quality tested in Britain. This reflects the same core values: authenticity, usefulness, and cultural heritage.
Future plans include expanding natural skincare lines and introducing additional artisan product categories while maintaining the same commitment to quality and purpose.
Looking Ahead
The vision for Akra continues to grow — with plans to strengthen wholesale partnerships, expand retail presence, and build a stronger High Street and online footprint. Growth is guided by research, customer relationships, word of mouth, and careful product development.
But the core mission remains unchanged: to celebrate handmade craftsmanship, support artisan communities, and offer products with meaning and story.
From Ghana to London, the journey of Akra is one of connection — between makers and homes, tradition and modern living, purpose and enterprise.
